DECEASED DONOR TRANSPLANTATION, TAMIL NADU, 2009

DECEASED DONOR TRANSPLANTATION, TAMIL NADU, 2009

Tamil Nadu’s performance in Deceased Donor Transplantation, since the start of a state wide program initiated by the state government has been:

Last quarter, 2008 2009 Total
Donors 6 59 65
Heart 1 14 15
Lung 0 2 2
Liver 4 45 49
Kidney 12 118 130
Total Major organs 17 179 196
Heart Valve 4 54 58
Cornea 8 84 92
Skin 1 0 1
Total Organs 30 317 347

Above are organs donated in Tamil Nadu.  One liver from above was shared to Karnataka.  3 livers and 1 heart were received from Karnataka in addition to above organs.  So total major organs utilised in Tamil Nadu is 200 as of end 2009, starting from October 2008.  The numbers above show that an average of 3 organs are used per donor.

The major reason for liver underutilization is unsuitable state of the organ.  Major reason for heart underutilization is lack of recipients.  Five hospitals in the state undertake liver transplantation and two hospitals do heart transplantation.

59 donors in the year 2009 amounts to 0.9 per million per year for the Tamil Nadu population of 67 million.

The monthly number of donors shows an increasing trend.

The last month of the year saw 11 donors, highest so far.

The Zonal distribution of donors is much skewed.  49 of the total 59 donors came from the North Zone, mostly Chennai City.  The West Zone that has 11 transplant hospitals, contributed just one donor.

Donation has slowed down in the non-Chennai area over the year.  The South and West Zones that contributed 23% donors in the first half, accounted for only 11% donors in the second half of the year.

The distribution is even more skewed among the hospitals.  Just one hospital, Apollo, accounted for 39% donors.  The top four hospitals contributed nearly three quarters of all donors.  The top six hospitals are:

Hospital Donors
Apollo Hospital, Chennai 23
Government General Hospital, Chennai 7
Christian Medical College, Vellore 7
Global Hospital, Chennai 6
Assured Best Care Hospital, Trichy 4
Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Madurai 3
50

The Government General Hospital promises to be the biggest contributor in the future.  It opened its account only during the last quarter of the year and contributed 40% donors during the last two months of the year.

The detailed sharing of organs for the full operational period of October 2008 to December 2009 is as follows:
